Highlight your Career Progression. In addition to your degree in pharmacy, have you obtained any certifications, or are you currently pursuing any that you would like to mention?
I began my career at the Dadaab Refugee Complex with the Kenya Red Cross Society before transitioning to clinical research. To prepare for this shift, I completed several courses, including Good Clinical Practice and Human Subject Protection, which are crucial for anyone involved in biomedical research. I am currently working towards attaining a Master’s degree in clinical drug development.
What do you love about being a Pharmacist?
I appreciate the diversity within the pharmacy profession and the opportunities it provides to pursue a research career, which I love. I truly love my job – what a privilege!
What do you consider to be the greatest achievement in your career as a pharmacist thus far? How has this achievement impacted your professional journey?
Heeding the call to pursue a less conventional career path required courage and endurance. It took me about three years to secure my first job in research, during which I networked with strangers on LinkedIn, completed numerous short courses, and applied for countless positions.
I have been fortunate to work with brilliant minds on pioneering and impactful research. For the past year, I have been involved in an innovative, large-scale clinical trial exploring a vector control approach to malaria prevention.
What has been your most challenging moment in the profession and what valuable lessons did you learn from it?
Political interference in the workplace. The first time I encountered political interference in the workplace, I was naive and unprepared. Fortunately, I had the support of an objective leader who championed women’s leadership. His influence left a lasting impression, prompting me to reflect on the type of leadership I aspire to embody.
What keeps you going?
There is still so much ahead to explore, conquer, and enjoy, and I have barely scratched the surface.
In addition to being a Pharmacist, what else do you enjoy doing?
I love a good book, collecting quotes from my reads, laughing with friends, listening to human stories, and watching sunsets.
